PAMHO/AGTSP

It has been a good while since I've been in contact with you! But I have been thinking of you and the lovely guidance you've given me pertaning to Upadesamrta... (which is why I'm writing again). It was also very nice to finally meet you in person at TKG's vyasa puja/book release in dallas!

So anyway...

I am as usual reading NOI every day and wanting to increase my understanding of the text and want to know what you think of a few things.

What do you think of reading BV Narayana Maharaja's translations of the Anuvrtti/Piyusa-darsini-vrtti commentaries?

ASA - AGTSP!   paoh.  I think there is no formal institutional rstriction again them.   I think it is a rather individual things how we relate to devotees such as Narayana Maharaja. As far as his translation of the Upadesamrta commentary by Bh. Siddhanta Sarasvati goes I think is simple, clear and quite useful to go deeper into Srila Prabhupada's work.

There is also this commentary by Radhika Raman Gosvami in this same translation, should we read his comments?

ASA - Same comments as above.   Smile.  Smile.

and lastly, when are you coming to texas next? I can arrange some nice things to do here!!!

ASA - www.jayarama.us/kd/cal.txt     we type with more smiles.   Only for two nights in January but hope to be in Houston for two weeks in June.

your servant, Gauralila Dasa (Rtadhvaja Swami)

Jaya!   AGTSP!    All success for your Sankirtana!  !                    !!!

There is also additional archaeological evidence posted on this other site: http://www.stephen-knapp.com/recent_archeological_finds_confirming_Vedic_history.htm If anyone is serious about pursuing these ideas they should probably get his book.

Dear GM PAMHO

As requested, i have posted the link below about the timeline of Krsna's pastimes: http://stephenknapp.wordpress.com/2012/10/23/time-line-of-lord-krishna-supported-by-science/

This seems to provide some evidence that supports what we have learned in Vedic Scriptures. I am not sure how much this would hold up in an academic environment, but it certainly is intriguing from a Vaiṣṇava perspective.

The search for confirmation of a historical view outside that of the 20th century Western worldview is certainly a task which Srinandanandana Prabhu has put a lot of hard work into and it may be a good preaching tool in opening up the minds of those willing to listen.

ASA - HpS -  Jaya!!  AGTSP   paoho....   Oink!     Oink!   We are just walking out he door in Guayquil so we have just captured the link and will take it with us!          We agree with your epistemelogical analysis, even Newton said that science can give an indication but it takes scripture and bhakti yoga from Guru to experience the truth beyond doubt.

Send more news as you get it.  We had BIG university program last night and they liked citations like this very much!

Classical Vedic Astronomy - 101 - Lesson One

11 years, 11 months ago by saranga-das in Hot Topics

Dear Maharaj:

Namaste, etc.

1. What is a nakshatra? It is a group stars close enough to be called a constellation. There are 27 such groups that the moon moves through each month on a daily basis.

ASA -  AGTSP  paoho.  Ooof!     Daily basis we have monthly movement.  !! ? Confusing!

However, when it comes to full moons, there are only 12 plus every 3rd year an extra one (adhik masa) in a single year. This can be very easily seen as the full moon moves through the 12 constellations of the zodiac (Aries, Taurus, Gemini, ..., Pisces) in one year's time; thus the Vedic constellations are portions of the 12 constellations of the zodiac.   ASA - Brother if you have a Day Job keep it. Your vebal description of optical motions are too

hard to follow. How can the full moon move throught the twelve signs of the Zodiac?  We thought that we moved through them one month at a time?

2. Go to www.astroviewer.com and click on "Interactive night sky map" and when the button labeled "Start Astroviewer" click on that. Next, select Ecucador, Quito. Since Quito is located on the equator (which divides the northern hemisphere from the southern hemisphere of the Earth), this is a great place to watch the full moon advance each month through the 12 constellations of the zodiac.

3. You'll need the dates for the full moons so go to www.timeanddate.com and select "Moon Phases"; then, select Equador, Quito for 2012. Plug these dates into astroviewer and you will see the advancing moon. This will show you that each and every full moon is uniquely identified with certain background stars; ie, the various constellations of the zodiac. Since the various nakshatras are foreign to us Westerners, the constellations of the zodiac work best for us as an introduction to the basic concepts of the lunar calendar.

4. You should also note that from Jan/09/2012 through Dec/28/2012 there are 13 full moons, starting and ending with the constellation of Gemini. Make sure you select constellation names, "latin" and that you select show celestial equator. It is important to note that the stars of the night sky are seen as comprising a sphere that surrounds the Earth globe.

5. Please let me know when you have completed lesson one. This will help you start your journey through the French Alps!

Ys, Saranga Thakura dasASA -  Whoop Whoop.  Co completely incomrehensible.   Why are you giving us 101  beofre 1AABC.   101 is for third year students!!    Laos the damn robot has a terrible internet connectin here in Guayaquil.  We cant even see what we ar typing until one minute ater we type it.    HpS Swami is cahint Japa acrooss the temple rom.  It is like Mayapura here.  We are abov eht Centinanial Plaza.  There is lots of fruit and lots of people to talk to .Do you get 16 rounds done before 10AM in the moringing? So nice to hear from you!!!!

Answer to Your Questions - Lunar Calendar

11 years, 11 months ago by saranga-das in Hot Topics

Dear Hanumat Swami Maharaj:

Pamho. AgtSP. Hare Krsna!

Thanks for letting me know what you need to help you understand this subject matter. I'm not writing a paper which would include a glossary of terms and it's hard to know what you already understand. So this clarification should help me in my response.

1. HpS - AGTSP Hope your drugs help your service! What is a Solar Transit?

Well, if I hadn't taken them, I probably would have risked a much shorter life span and at this point that would certainly limit my service.

Regarding your question, "what is a solar transit?", a solar transit is supposed to mean when the sun crosses a celestial sign of the zodiac.

ASA - Jaya!  Simple and clear..  From the Frog to the Elefant.  We got it.  AGTSP   paoho.   Whoop!    WHoop!

These signs are derived from the constellations of night sky that lay in the daily path taken by the sun in its course through out the year.  This path is called the ecliptic.

HpS - What is a tropical sign? What are Nakshatras?

A tropical sign is one of the 12 signs associated with the sun's path troughout the year. It starts when the sun crosses over the equator from its southern path to its northern path. It is derived from the night time zodiac but doesn't change over the millenium. The Hindus recognized that the sun signs and the night signs varied over time; this is called procession.

ASA - How many years is the cycle of the procession?

HpS - Does what for us now? Ha! Ha! Ha(re)! It is just like talking French to a Chinaman for us common folk!!! Honestly. You have to define the terms assuming you are starting with people who have a simple newspaper level of astronomical understanding. Did you know that a 12AU7 was a dual pentode vacum tube? -{:O) More News!!!

It really would help if you could take a little time to visit the website, www.astroviewer.com. I think that following a Vaisnava lunar calendar should include understanding it. Furthemore, SP really made alot of emphasis of understanding the Vedic cosmology which is a the heart of the Vedic lunar calendar. If we don't do that, than why follow the lunar calendar at all? It would be alot simpler to just celebrate the same holiday's every year, just as we do with our birthdays. More later.

Ys, ST das

ASA -  Jaya!   Thank you.  AGTSP   In this Bhakti vaibhava course we are systematically reading the Bhagavatam and the declarations of Prabhupada are kind of to the contrary.   Not completely.  It is more like we should read about the creation, Sarga, Visarga, Virat rupa, Hiranya garbha, and get a reasonable understanding of these things, but it is not necessary to know then in all the detail that the SB presents them.  The same with Cosmology, Astrology, Ayurveda, we should have a practical understanding of them for our service and then we should be expert in the things that relate to our service.  For example, you probably have a reasonbly sane idea like we do why we are vegetarian and why we are not vegan, but we don't know the detailed statistics of animal abuse reactions of the brain to different bovine animal fats and other sources of fats and sugars.

To make a debate and convince people at that detailed level you need to know this.    So we need to know some general principles of astrology and to be able to judge you as an expert and then take your expert advice.

Epistemology, Ki Jai!

HpS - ASA -  Oink!   Oinnk!!!    AGTSP    paoho.     So nice to hear from Mr. Jaya!          Honestly we are 64 years old now.  Hair on our chest is almost 100 white/grey.   Our eyes are failing.  One tooth has already been taken by the Tooth Fairy to our next destination etc.  This is the last year, month that we are going to push it.  2013 our plan is "Monkey and Piggy Retire Timely".  2014 - 2024 whatever Krsna wants.  Whoop!     WHoop!            Domincan sounds nice!!!      We certainly want to stay in touch with it all!     If Krsna wants we certainly could have no objection.     -{:o)+
