Hare Krsna, Dudes and Dudins!
We are here in Murphy's Boro with HpSwami et al.

. . . Like next week, we head for Atlanta and Spain.

We just got all the mail caught up!!   No letters older than 2-days waiting [!],  but,  now we will go traveling, so again we will only be answering URGENT letters during that time . . . regular stuff, like BOISE KIDS.

That's April 1-12th.  Look at the Calendar in the Kapi dhvaja.

How are you?  How is your health?  Where are you?

These are all pretty strange questions in some since, no, because we are not these bodies, anymore than we are the characters in the movie we are watching.

Of course, once we become devotees, we get more or less control over our puppets. We can use them to preach to each other and others.

             <img alt="devil" height="23" src="http://hps.monkeywarrior.com/sites/all/libraries/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/devil_smile.png" title="devil" width="23" /> - "Hello, I am the Evil One".

                <img alt="cool" height="23" src="http://hps.monkeywarrior.com/sites/all/libraries/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/shades_smile.png" title="cool" width="23" /> - "Oh, I am the Teacher".

THERE IS ONLY ONE PURPOSE IN LIFE: BE HAPPY!     [Prabhupada told this to Jayananda Das].

         Hari Bolo!!!

But we cannot be happy without our friend:   K R S N A !      Forget the Yamaraja and Maha-visnu job, sometimes!
Go on Sankirtan with Lord Nityananda. Hide behind Him when Jagai and Madhai come down the street.

Now we will chant HK and develop our Calendar.    Tonight we will drive our 'new', year 2000 Mercedes, to Amit's house, about 20-miles away and hope the wheels don't fall off. We will have an Evening Program and talk about how he can take charge of NIOS. He's a Doctor. His father, Madhava Das, was initiated by H. H. Gopal Krsna Goswami (as I remember), his good wife is PhD in chemisty.

                      Tomorrow is TLC.

We will write some more about the "Seattle Symposium" and wait in great expectation for the news from Sattva that BNP has signed the agreement to co-sponsor "Art and the Sacred" in 2018. The minute that happens we can contact the Ambasador, ICCR, Maha-prabhu in Uraguay.

Maybe we will be able to read Hari-nama Cintamani and the Introduction to Jung's Red Book, write a Bhagavata commentary with RRD and NGD for publication.

Maybe we can get into a good dialog with the Jesuits in Peru! Maybe...   {Piggy: Maybe you can get your rounds done today. (TB: Oh, yeah!  Gotta do that too!)}

Shelter request

All glories to srila prabhupada!
All glories to sri sri guru and gauranga!

Jay Maharaj! How are you? How is your health?

HpS - ASA -- Almost every letter asks: 1) Where are you?, 2) What are you doing?  3) How is your health. We are a little bit naseaus, our Inguinal Ligaments are burning a little etc because of our life in the modes of passion and ignorance a little bit. We are fighting to become perfect, but even to death we will be in the middle of these modes, especially if we are preaching. NOI-6, no?
Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna!   How is your health?

Our host, NGD strained his knee just while walking but it seems to be healing. His good wife has to go in for kidney surgery today.

I'm writting you because after a few years I realized that you are my Gurudev and would like to ask you for shelter.

HpS -  What about Krsna!!??  Prabhupada??  http://www.vedabase.com/en/sb/8/24/53 is so nice.  I guess that is some of the shelter we can give, giving some nice stuff to read about Guru. That whole chapter is worth reading.

Also would like to ask you for your blessings for a mental health issue Im dealing with and to quit smoking. Im following all the other principles thanks to krishna.

sincerely,
Federico

HpS - God bless you, Hare Krsna!!   Tell us what you think about that verse and chapter.

Querido Gurudeva,

HpS - ASA -- Super. There is a devota in Oregon. Our God-sister, Maha-bhagavata Devi Dasi. She was one of the biggest collectors in ISKCON. Very nice. She started making cakes for weddings, birthdays etc. and very quickly she had more clients than she could handle. Use you customers as your salesmen. Give them printed stuff so they can give it to others who want to know about your service. Give them small free cake for every big order they give you. Preach.

ASA - Romeo y Juliet, Draupadi and Arjuna, Kunti and the Sun God!

HpS - Don't desire anything else!   This alone will mature into perfection. If we can go out on other inds of Sankirtan also, that is also very nice!

HpS - This is very nice in the main, like NOI-8, but also in our stage, NOI-7: Take some of the bitter sugar.

Aun no canto mis rondas regularmente.

HpS - Yes, there are different levels of development. Take some vow of rounds that you know you can do and write to us. Eg. I will chant 4-rounds a day until the next Ekadasi, or I will chant 1-round a year on Janmastami without fail. <img alt="devil" height="23" src="http://hps.monkeywarrior.com/sites/all/libraries/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/devil_smile.png" title="devil" width="23" />
Then after you do your Vrata examine the result and make another vow. In this way you will get back to the Contract that Srila Prabhupada is offering for Initiated devotees.

About my first letter part 2

All glories to Srila Prabhupada

My remarks Maharaja,

How is your health?

HpS - Right now we have some pain in our Inguinal Ligaments. It comes when we eat to many sweets!

How is it found in general?

HpS - Thanks to our General, Sril Prabhupada, we are engaged in Lord Caitanya's Sankirtan!

I am Ma. Soledad from Chile again. Personally Maharaja I want to tell you that I have been somewhat unmotivated, I am very tired physically, a doctor told me that I probably have a disease called "myasthenia gravis" or "fibromyalgia" I am waiting to have laksmi and to be able to do tests ... Sometimes I think it is so difficult to internalize that we are NOT the body.

HpS - It is actually easier to be a Paramahamsa, first class devotee. Just chant Hare Krsna and and be happy. Your progress will be quickly but also without violence.

Well, the main thing of this letter Maharaja is with Abhimanyu we want to make a very very important invitation. You told me that in July he travels to Chile, therefore we want to know if it is possible that on that trip he can attend our marriage. We are going to look for it and leave it where it will be staying. The truth is that there were rumors that came in April so we wanted to do the marriage ceremony in that month, but without asking anything to you. On this occasion I sincerely write to invite you to our celebration, it will be very quiet with our families and friends.

HpS - Why quiet!   20-elephants!   You can wear a silk saree with gold from India. Abhmanyu Das can arrive with his friends on big dancing horses, sweep you off your feet and carry you away to his father's castle, along with 20-girl of your girl friends.

Do you know the dates you are traveling to our country? If so, could we share that beautiful news? And also if you can share with us the day of our marriage.

HpS - June 28th to July 12th, +/- one day.

I say goodbye and I will be attentive to your merciful answer. On this occasion use the google translator, which is very efficient !!

My obeisances dear Maharaja

Greetings from Chile

ASA - Who is Krsna?  Who are you?

Toda gloria a Srila Prabhupada
Toda gloria a Sri Sri Nitay Gauranga

He desperdiciado mi vida durante muchos años, y ahora he decidido mirar nuevamente al Señor Supremo...

Hare Krsna!  Hare Krsna.  Thank you for the fotos!!!

Do you speak English?

Vyasasana and the qualification of the speaker (SB 1.1 5-8)

<style type="text/css">p { margin-bottom: 0.25cm; line-height: 120%; }a:link { } </style>

Dear Guru Maharaja, please accept my humble obeisances.
All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

I am presenting here my thoughts and questions on the topic of Vyasa's seat and qualifications needed to sit on it. I tried hard to write it down the better [best] I can, so that it has some sense.

What makes a usual seat to become a vyasasana? I doubt it is how big the asana is, or from which material it is made, or how it is carved? I will say there are two aspects that make a asana an vyasasana:

  • it is the purpose and motivation of the speaker – if proper, that would be to present the conclusions which Vedavyasa presented in his writings

and

  • the talk itself – i.e. is the talk following or not the vaisnava siddhanta exactly.

In other words, a vyasasana can be any asana (seat) from which a person talks and presents the viewpoint of Śrī Vyāsadeva. That seat can be a simple cushion, chair, or finely carved throne.

Is that a correct statement?

HpS - Seems so to us [HpS, TB, BW, UG], but UG points out that if it has lion feet then it is also a Simhasana.

In verses SB 1.1.6-8 we find the qualifications of the speaker who sits on vyasasana:

  • completely free from all vice.
  • well versed in all the scriptures famous for religious life, and in the Purāṇas and the histories as well,
  • have gone through them (scriptures) under proper guidance and have also explained them
  • submissive

That is the verse. And SP explains in the purport:

  • there are four major vices (4 regs)
  • be well versed in all revealed scriptures or in the Vedas. The Purāas are also parts of the Vedas. And histories like the Mahābhārata or Rāmāyaa are also parts of the Vedas. The ācārya or the gosvāmī must be well acquainted with all these literatures.

Then in SB 1.1.7 purport, SP writes:

Besides Vyāsadeva, there are other sages who are the authors of six different philosophical systems, namely Gautama, Kaṇāda, Kapila, Patañjali, Jaimini and Aṣṭāvakra. Theism is explained completely in the Vedānta-sūtra, whereas in other systems of philosophical speculations, practically no mention is given to the ultimate cause of all causes. One can sit on the vyāsāsana only after being conversant in all systems of philosophy so that one can present fully the theistic views of the Bhāgavatam in defiance of all other systems.

My understanding of English language is that words “well versed”, “well acquainted” and “conversant” are synonyms. They all mean the same thing.

HpS - Yes, sure seems like it. Maybe some small differences.

Now, what is the practical meaning of “to be conversant in all those systems of philosophy” (which I believe are also called ṣaḍdarśana) ? How much a person should know? Is a few sentence definition of what those systems propound enough?

HpS - This is a question that I have also had for a long time too. I guess that anyone who has taken proper Bhakti sastri or studied to the level in Srila Prabhupada's books has the preliminary qualifications. He is a Brahmana and can sit on the ISKCON Vyasasana. Of course, he knows that he is not the Founder-Acharya. Without formally naming these philosophies, Srila Prabhupada presents their ideas in BG As It Is, TLC, etc.

While SP was present, he instructed devotees to give and hear classes on BG, SB, ISO… Devotees were sitting on vyasasana while speaking. Did those devotees then, and also, do the devotees now, know and are well versed with saddarsanas?

HpS - Exactly. I think they were 'well versed' in that they knew the conclusion. Eg. in the Krsna book Krsna presents Karma - mimamksa to Nanda Maharaja to try to convince him to do the Govardhana Puja and Srila Prabhupada talks about it. I the Prayers by the Personified Vedas we find so much. In Purush-sukta confirmed in Canto Two, so much. Again, they aren't up to the level of Ramanuja acharya, but they should know their limits and then be able to direct high class Brahmanas to more detailed sources if they want those, but "Chant Hare Krsna and be happy!" coming from a proper ISKCON Brahmana is perfect advice, Siddhanta, no?

I am asking this because, apart from being (hopefully submissive and) interested in the general topic of what is discussed here, also, to understand the wideness of SP's instructions. For example, SP says in his books such a point that whoever sits on vyasasana should be well acquainted with saddarsana. Also, most probably, not all devotees who sit on vyasasana have such a qualification. My idea is that this is a gradual process. And every person should thoughtfully decide for themselves if to sit and speak or not. Is this a right understanding?

HpS - I did not want to take Sannyasa, but Hansadutta Swami, Atreya rsi Prabhu, Bhakti Svarupa damodara Swami, Ramesvara Swami, Tripurari Swami all said I shoul do it. Then I started traveling and Kirtananda Swami, Virabahu Das, Tamal-krsna Goswami, Rabindra-svarupa Das et al, gave me the nod that I should do this. O.K.  Prabhupada similar, no?  We make our personal decision about accepting attention to our preaching, but that should include consideration of our authorities, friends.

Also, maybe for the time being, a person is not 100% fit to sit on Vyasa's seat, but he is a “mango in the process to maturity”.

Your servant Namacarya Das

HpS - Yes, and he knows that he is just a new Brahmana, Madhyama adhikari, so he explains what he knows. Gives sources for information, and then the audience is benefited. A high class India Brahmana, scholar who has read the Sad-darshana, and is nice, may ask: Esteemed New Iskcon Brahmana, I know Dhyananda Sarasvati, Pusti-marga, but I have not really had a chance to read a simple Bio-graphy, maybe thirty pages of your Acharya, Sri Krsna Caitanya. Is one available?

Where would you direct him?
